Fire and First Aid Training Courses

Purpose

FFA (Fire and First Aid) LTD is committed to providing a comprehensive fire safety and first aid training to organisations and delegates for compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Health and Safety (first Aid) Regulations and UK legislation, professional industry and local authority bodies.
FFA (Fire and First Aid) Ltd is committed to ensuring all the training courses delivered are to be enjoyable and educational.

Scope

This document explains the fire and first aid training packages provided by FFA (Fire and First Aid) LTD, it doesn’t include the competencies for delivering these packages.
All training will be delivered in accordance with current Fire Safety or First Aid practises.
When arranging training courses, the organisation or delegates must advise the FFA (Fire and First Aid) Ltd of any particular personnel disabilities or hazards in the workplace requirements so the training can be tailored to meet those needs.

Venue

All training courses are conducted in a classroom format.
The training course venue will be large enough to accommodate the number of delegates, teaching aids/equipment and practical sessions (min 1.25m 2 per delegate or 4m x 4m per 12 delegates for first aid training, approximate and safe (no combustible materials in area) external facility for fire extinguisher and lecture style for fire training), and where necessary access to catering, toilets and parking facilities.
The training course venue will comply with the relevant health and safety legislation and a safety risk assessment will be completed prior to the training course taking place to ensure the safety of trainer/assessor and delegates.
The safety risk assessment will cover aspects of room safety and fire safety hazards and risks of the premises, access/egress, suitability for peoples physical impairments, seating, flooring (especially for practical first aid), noise (adequate so delegates are not distracted), ventilation, lighting (suitable for reading/writing), heating (adequate for delegates minimal worn clothing) and cleanliness.

Training equipment

Training resources is a vital part of the training for providing knowledge, understanding and skills.
Training course equipment includes:
Audio visual equipment to facilitate the use of PowerPoint presentations Information manuals (for relevant fire safety, first aid at work manuals, first aid made easy/CPR and AED first aid and paediatric made easy booklets, Training aid (including: teaching example aids, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, adult/junior/baby manikins, dressing and bandages, first aid treatment items (auto-injectors; head, facial masks, etc), quiz cards) 
For first aid delegates, first aid pack with assessment booklet.


All first aid manikins and equipment will be cleaned during the first aid training with anti-bacterial wipes, and post training all equipment hygienically washed, manikins will have lungs changed to ensure protection for cross infection. Clean and maintenance register held for evidence by FFA (Fire and First Aid) Ltd.

Course Management System

FFA (Fire and First Aid) LTD will oversee all training courses are carried out in alignment with the requirements
stated in the Regulatory Reform (fire Safety) Order 2005, Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 as
amended 2013 and The First Aid Industry Body (FAIB) for delegate qualification evidence.

Each course will be held on a register and demonstrated by:

  • Course title
  • Course venue
  • Course dates
  • Assessment date
  • Details of the trainers and assessors used
  • Signed statement to validate all courses and assessment standards have been met
  • Name of delegate
  • Assessment pass/fail data register
  • Requalification date for delegates

Preparation and Planning

All training provided by FFA (First and first Aid) LTD will be conducted in an environment whereby all delegates will have adequate space for theory and practical work, all delegates will be able to hear and see the trainer at all time (for people with impairments will be assessed at time of booking and if necessary adequate resources will be implemented) to ensure effective learning.

The training course content is detailed in this procedure and each course has an additional subject training folders. This subject training folder will hold evidence of the presentation sides and notes, and lesson plan.

The lesson plan will detail the following:

  • Course title
  • Ratio of delegates to trainer/assessor
  • Objective of the course
  • Qualification requirements
  • Time allocated for each session (breakdown of course content to ensure delegates have time to hear, digest and
  • understand the information and skills)
  • Delivery of each session will be introduced by providing an understanding of each topic.
  • Teaching methods (visual, audible, demonstration, participation through exercises, questions and answers)
  • Type of equipment to be used and the number of items required for number of delegates
  • Method for the assessment of delegates during and on completion of course

Assessment of Delegates

The assessment of delegates on any course provided by FFA (Fire and First Aid) LTD is an essential part of trainer/assessor syllabus to ensure the delegates can demonstrate they have gained the relevant knowledge, skills and understanding of each topic covered prior to moving onto the next topic.
For qualification training course, the delegate will be issued with an assessment booklet at the start of the course.
This assessment booklet is subdivided into sections and topics that are required under the relevant fire safety and first aid legislation to which delegates to have a formal assessment by the trainer during the course.

For qualification courses, a final assessment is undertaken to ensure the delegates have the correct knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence for them to be able to deal with any fire or first aid emergency situations they may be asked to attend.
This final assessment is whereby all delegates are individually assessed by their demonstration of key elements.

For example:
Fire extinguisher – Fire type classification; identification of fire extinguisher to be used; practical for the safe use of an extinguisher on a fire.
For first aid at work – Assessing the situation; completion of primary and secondary survey; dealing with an unresponsive casualty who is (a) breathing (b) not-breathing; and how to deal with a severe bleed.
Delegates will be placed in a waiting area away from the location of the assessment and the assessor will call the delegate in when they are ready for the delegate to complete their final assessment.

Certification

All training courses that are subject to a qualification syllabus will be issued with a certificate and valid for the stipulated period.

The certificate will display the following information:

  • Name of training organisation – FFA (Fire and First Aid) Ltd
  • Name of the qualification
  • Name of the delegate
  • Date the course was completed
  • Validity period from the date the course was completed
  • An indication that the certificate has been issued for the purposes Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety)
  • Order 2005 or Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 amended
  • Signature from FFA (Fire and First Aid) LTD authorised person.


For first aid qualification course: FAIB certificate of approval number
All training qualification certificates will be issued on the completion of a set assessment.
All qualification certificates issued will be recorded on either the fire training course or first aid course registers.
Prior to the qualification certification expiry date, a requalification reminder will be sent to the organisation or delegate.
If qualification certification has expired the delegate will no longer be considered competent to undertake the role within the workplace.
For training course that don’t require a qualification certificate, a certificate of attendance can be issued if the organisation or delegate requires evidence of attendance.

Delegate evaluation form

On completion of the training course the delegates will be required to complete a training course evaluation form.

The form will include:

  • Details of the delegate (however, this is not a mandatory field)
  • Details of the trainer and assessor
  • Assessment of trainer, course content, training resources, and the venue


Section for delegates to provide information following the course (example: how more or less confident do you feel about dealing with an emergency situation; have you had to use your first aid skills/ knowledge, would you recommend FFA (Fire and First Aid) LTD to others, and if no why)
